- Donating Publicly Traded Securities: Excellent News for Donors
-
The gifting of publicly traded securities enables a donor to not only support a worthy cause, but to increase his or her donation while saving on capital gains tax. Indeed, since May 2nd, 2006 the taxable capital gain for donated securities to a charitable organization such as the Montreal Heart Institute Foundation is reduced to zero.
What types of securities can be donated?
The securities have to be publicly traded on a prescribed stock exchange to be valid. They can include stocks, rights, mutual funds, interests in related segregated funds, or bonds.
Donate the Proceeds of the Sale or the Securities Themselves?
It is actually more advantageous to transfer securities directly to a charitable organization than to sell them and donate the proceeds. As shown in the following example, donation of securities evaluated at $10,000 directly to the Montreal Heart Institute Foundation will yield a better return on donation, not only for the donor, but for the Foundation.

- Honour Fund
-
You wish to make a meaningful gift to a worthy cause by creating a fund to which you, your family and friends can contribute when celebrating a wedding, the birth of a child, the anniversary or memory of a loved-one or just because it feels right? You are looking for a way for your business to honour the founder of the company or a colleague? The Montreal Heart Institute Foundation’s new Honour Fund is most likely for you.
Whether the fund is in your name, the name of a loved one, your family or your business, you will be leaving your philanthropic footprint while contributing to the MHI’s care, research, prevention and training programs.
The MHIF Honour Fund at a glance…
- A total gift of $10,000 or more in the first year, in a single or cumulative donations
- The name of your choice for the Fund
- Your contributions transferred to the MHI annually
- An official receipt for each donation to the Fund
- A mention on the Foundation’s new Honour Fund wall
Your gesture will have an impact on the lives of thousands of patients, as did Réjean Royer’s gift to honour his wife Joëlle.

- Paying Tribute to a Loved One or Colleague
-
For those who wish to donate less than $10,000 or to contribute from time to time without creating an Honour Fund, you can still pay tribute to a loved one, a friend or a colleague for a wedding, a promotion, an anniversary, a baptism, a bar/bat Mitzvah, Christmas, Mother or Father’s Day, or simply for the joy of it. Please contact us and we will be happy to discuss it with you.
