Montreal Heart Institute Education
|
MHI Institute plays a leading role in
training heart specialists.
The Institute's numerous departments and
services play a leading role in teaching modern
cardiology to medical residents, international fellows,
graduate students, nurses and health professionals from
other Quebec hospitals, and the general public.

|
-
All cardiology and surgical program residents must
complete a training internship of at least one year at the
Institute.
-
50% of the
Université de Montréal's residency
cardiology program is completed at the Institute.
-
The MHI is the only centre where cardiac
anaesthesiology is formally taught.
-
Optional internships are also in demand due to the
volume and variety of the cases seen at the Institute.
-
The Institute also dispenses formal training to
various types of health professionals, such as pharmacists,
nurses, physiotherapists, respiratory therapists,
perfusionists, clinical nutritionists and
administrators.
-
The Institute's ultimate goal is to offer optimal
teaching conditions.
In 2002-2003, the Institute
welcomed:
-
104 residents, monitors and physicians from the
Montreal, Sherbrooke and McGill universities, including:
-
16 cardiology research fellows;
-
4 surgical fellows;
-
2 anaesthesiology specialists;
-
2 physicians in student shadow programs.
-
40 day interns in cardiology, most from the
Université de Montréal, but also from the
Laval and Sherbrooke universities and 3 European
universities.
-
Nursing internships with varying levels of
specialization:
-
83 CEGEP-level nursing interns;
-
9 undergraduate-level nursing interns;
-
3 graduate-level nursing interns.
-
2 medical secretary interns.
Other activities featured in the Institute's teaching
program:
-
Now in its 12th year, the
MHI's Live Interventional Cardiology course
draws over 600 participants from health professionals in
Canada, the United States, Europe and Asia.
-
Research Day, which marks the efforts of
Masters or PhD researchers.
-
In the Heart of the Action Day, gathering
Quebec pharmacists, general practitioners, nurses and
dieticians.
-
The
Half-Day workshop for Montreal nursing
students in their 3rd year of CEGEP and
Université de Montréal students.
Because the Institute also values patient education,
a number of medical conferences such as "Seasons of the Heart"
are offered to the public. The lectures are aimed at preventing
heart disease or maintaining heart health through sound lifestyle
choices.
